Statement from Alissa Brennan, Candidate for Rochester City Council (East District):
In May, I quietly launched my campaign for Rochester City Council by bringing together nearly 100 neighbors to talk about the future of the East District. I shared my vision for District leadership and the response was overwhelming; we raised more than $10,000 in small donations, and dozens of volunteers stepped forward because they believe it is time for new leadership.
Since then, I have had countless conversations with residents, neighborhood leaders, business owners, and stakeholders across the East District. One message has come through loud and clear: the neighborhoods in the East District want a representative who is connected to this community. The East District deserves a Councilmember who shows up consistently, who fights for the resources, services, and the attention this community has too often gone without. They deserve a representative who is focused on the work of City Council, not on politics.
Earlier today, Mary Lupien announced that she will not seek reelection and endorsed Monroe County Legislator Rachel Barnhart. I welcome Legislator Barnhart to the race. I know the voters of the East District will be glad to see that there will be choice on the ballot and almost a full year to learn about the candidates.
The contrast in this race is clear: Legislator Barnhart is a long-term political candidate, who has run for a wide range of seats; I am a hard-working, first generation professional and mother of two who is offering a new generation of leadership grounded in service, collaboration, and accountability.
As an attorney with experience in both private practice and local government, I know how to research issues thoroughly, build consensus, and obtain results. I’ve taken on leadership roles across our local Bar associations, been recognized for that work, and completed leadership programs through Monroe County and the Monroe County Bar Association. These experiences have prepared me to be an effective advocate for every neighborhood in the East District.
The energy behind this campaign is real, and it’s growing every day. I’m grateful for every resident, volunteer, and supporter who has joined this movement.
We’re just getting started.
Sincerely,
Alissa Brennan
